It’s a testament to the timeless brilliance of the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz – starring Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, and Ray Bolger – that it continues to capture imaginations today.
You therefore shouldn’t be greatly surprised to learn that Zynga has transformed the film's imagery into a slots app, which has been bringing the wonderful world of the Wizard to a new generation since the first version was launched in 2014.
Like other apps of its type, Wizard of Oz Slots isn’t just one game, but instead presents a series of slots machines that can be unlocked by committed players. It’s also free to access or download, although to get the greatest value from it, you’ll inevitably want to purchase credits within the app to spend on the games.
In common with similar slots apps out there, Wizard of Oz Slots has most of its games unlocked at first. However, the more you play the slots here, the greater the number of games that will become available to you, with each machine being based on a major chapter in the film.
You start at Level 1 with only the Dorothy & Toto slots machine available at first, but others – including the likes of Munchkinland, Yellow Brick Road, and Scarecrow – will open themselves up as you continue to use the app.
It’s important to note that you won’t win any actual money from the slots here, as it is very much intended to be a social gaming app only.
The Wizard of Oz Slots app works hard to reward you along your journey to the Emerald City, with such perks as:
Millions of free credits each day from daily and hourly bonuses
It’s hard to argue with the app’s beautiful recreation of the characters and wider Wizard of Oz world, with the graphics being especially impressive when the game is played on a smartphone screen, rather than a desktop monitor.
The variety of promotions and bonuses is also pleasing, as is the format of the app based on “levels,” which means you don’t get to access all of the machines straight away. This, in turn, helps to keep the app genuinely interesting for longer.
Furthermore, once you have downloaded the app, you can enjoy it anywhere, even when there isn’t an Internet connection available. So, if you’re ever stuck on a bus or in a café without access to Wi-Fi, you could always burn some time playing Wizard of Oz Slots.
As mentioned above, you do get millions of free credits a day on this app, but they don’t last for very long. That’s why we very much recommend you play this game with a view to spending some of your own money to speed up your progress through the levels, as you’ll otherwise have to keep waiting for your free credits to be replenished after just a few minutes of gaming.
The Wizard of Oz is the perfect choice of movie to be turned into a slots game because slots are very much about granting you access to an alternative, fun, and interesting universe. Sure enough, the graphics are colorful and crisp, and the relevant characters are faithfully portrayed.
There are also some sound effects in the app, but these are generally done quite tastefully, save for the annoying rustling noise that keeps repeating itself on the main games menu. Still, you’ve always got the option of turning the sound effects or music off via the app’s options menu.
As for the navigation… well, that’s also highly intuitive. If you’re on your phone, you simply need to swipe right to browse the slots machines, and the other menu options are highly visible without making the interface look cluttered.
Wizard of Oz Slots is available on the following platforms:
If you ever need a bit of help within the Wizard of Oz Slots app, all that you need to do is tap the “gear” image in the bottom left-hand corner of the app screen, then “Help & Customer Support.” This will take you to a series of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), divided into categories like “Billing,” “The Yellow Brick Road,” “Account & Settings,” and so on.
It is also here where you will find “community” links to the app’s Facebook and Twitter pages and even an online forum dedicated to the app. The latter seems to be reasonably active – the last post at the time of writing this review was just a few hours ago. Much the same can be said about a very busy Facebook page, but the Twitter account hasn’t received any updates since October 2016.
We do quite like Wizard of Oz Slots, particularly from a visual standpoint. Its graphics and sound effects are pretty much ideal for a slots app based on such a legendary and distinctive movie, but it also has a clean-looking interface that makes it easy to navigate.
The broad range of bonuses and prizes, together with the “levels” format of the app, also helps to keep people playing for longer. Do bear in mind, though, that those millions of free credits can run out very quickly.
Give Wizard of Oz Slots a try today to immerse yourself in a truly wonderful world of gaming.
